The 2007 Domaine d'Auvenay, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is considered a rare and elegant wine. With concentrated aromas, flavours of ripe red fruits, blackberry, and lily, this full-bodied wine is wonderfully balanced. The spices are combined with stone mineral layering and leather notes, giving it a long cellaring capacity.

The yields behind Bize-Leroy’s Domaine d’Auvenay 2007 Mazis-Chambertin were so tiny as to be more typical of her 2008s, and the concentration of flavors is correspondingly intense yet in no way exaggerated or inimical to elegance. Sweetly ripe fresh plum, blackberry, lily, and heliotrope perfume; soy- and red meat juice-like savor; and iodine, salt, peat, and crushed stone mineral layering combine for an amazingly absorbing, kaleidoscopic performance that leaves my mouth resonating. It will be exciting to revisit in 20 years. David Schildknecht, Jun 2010

Domaine d'Auvenay

History

In the 1950s, Lalou Bize-Leroy studied the terroir of Burgundy and began working for her father’s négociant business, Maison Leroy. Her father had invested in the winery in the 1940s, so by 1971, she had become the Directrice and attended meetings with her father at Domaine de la Romanée Conti (DRC). Three years later, Madame Leroy became the co-manager of DRC and raised it to the top-level. In 1942, Lalou left DRC and devoted her time to her own businesses: Domaine d’Auvenay, Domaine Leroy and the original Maison Leroy.

Domaine d'Auvenay is the third estate in the Leroy empire, named after Lalou Bize-Leroy’s home. The estate has extra importance to her, as her family's original domaine has been in production even longer than Domaine de la Romanée Conti.

For years, connoisseurs have praised Domaine d'Auvenay for its exceptional quality and unique character.

Technology

Madame Leroy uses sustainable viticulture, aimed at developing the vitality of the vines. This means, the vines reach a notably high average age. Before planting new vines, they take a careful selection of cuttings from the finest old vines in the vineyard. Strict pruning and bud removal helps to limit yield and this keeps the quality of the grapes extremely high. Each bunch goes through a thorough inspection pre-harvest and at the sorting table, before arriving in the fermentation vats.

Domaine d'Auvenay, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2007 is a rich, opulent and complex wine. With incredible depth and a good structure, a long cellaring life is guaranteed. After a long ageing, Mazis-Chambertin has generous aromas of spices, leather and red fruits. It is one of the rare reds from Domaine d'Auvenay.

Côte de Nuits

The Côte de Nuits is located in the north of the Côte d'Or wine region in Burgundy. The area is widely known as the home of Pinot Noir, a title reinforced by its star wines. Only 5% of Côte de Nuits wines are made from other grapes – like Chardonnay.

The Côte de Nuits focuses on quality rather than quantity. It includes 24 of Burgundy's 33 Grand Cru appellations and some Premier Cru sites.

Mazis-Chambertin is the northern Grand Cru vineyard in Côte de Nuits sub-region. It covers 9.1 hectares on the upper slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin's Grand Cru belt, and is planted entirely with Pinot Noir.

Mazis-Chambertin has chalky, limestone soils which are ideal for the production of high-quality Pinot Noir. The water drains well, which encourages the vine to put its energy into grape production. The continental climate and south-east view help the grapes achieve the right amount of solar heat and light to ripen well and retain good acidity.

Mazis-Chambertin wines are structured, rich and complex.
