The Macallan distillery
History
The Macallan was one of the first legal distilleries in Scotland. It was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. What started as a wooden shed with two stills, gradually expanded as the Macallan gained a reputation for excellent quality and original character. It became the first to source, create, toast and season specially made wooded casks, further distinguishing its single malts. The brand’s balance of heritage and vision has made it one of the most valued in the world. The most expensive bottle of whisky to auction in the world was a Macallan. Its new distillery building, made of oak and glass, represents the Macallan dedication to tradition and vision for the future.
Technology
Macallan’s stills are among the smallest on Speyside, giving their spirits maximum contact with the copper and helping to create their characteristic rich, fruity and full-bodied flavours. Furthermore, the distillery gives special attention to its oak casks, which are sourced, crafted and seasoned according to the demands of its master whisky makers. Macallan invest more in their wood casks than any other distillery. This is because the wood not only influences the taste of the whisky, but its colour too. No artificial colours are used, and achieving consistency demands the particular attention and skill of the Master Whisky Maker.
