Robb Report
The Macallan 65 is lighter than expected, both to the eye (its bright amber color is completely natural) and the palate. All that time in oak would qualify it for Social Security status as a human, to say nothing of its status among whiskies. But while its tannic, oaky notes bely its age, it’s also spry and robust. Rich notes of dark fruit come from the sherry-cask aging for which the Macallan is famous, along with the aforementioned light smoke from the peat. It’s in the Macallan tradition, and yet unlike anything the brand is producing today. — Tony Sachs, RobbReport

The Macallan distillery

History

The Macallan was one of the first legal distilleries in Scotland. It was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. What started as a wooden shed with two stills, gradually expanded as the Macallan gained a reputation for excellent quality and original character. It became the first to source, create, toast and season specially made wooded casks, further distinguishing its single malts. The brand’s balance of heritage and vision has made it one of the most valued in the world. The most expensive bottle of whisky to auction in the world was a Macallan. Its new distillery building, made of oak and glass, represents the Macallan dedication to tradition and vision for the future.

Technology

Macallan’s stills are among the smallest on Speyside, giving their spirits maximum contact with the copper and helping to create their characteristic rich, fruity and full-bodied flavours. Furthermore, the distillery gives special attention to its oak casks, which are sourced, crafted and seasoned according to the demands of its master whisky makers. Macallan invest more in their wood casks than any other distillery. This is because the wood not only influences the taste of the whisky, but its colour too. No artificial colours are used, and achieving consistency demands the particular attention and skill of the Master Whisky Maker.

Speyside

The Speyside is home to some of the most renowned and best-selling whisky distilleries in Scotland. Its whiskies are known for their elegance and complexity, and tend to be sweeter and lighter than those made in the highlands and Islay. Other characteristics include fruitiness, complexity and a hint of peat.

The River Spey is crucial to production — it provides the water needed for distillation. This, plus the remote setting is the reason that so many premium distilleries occupy this area. Among them, Macallan is one of the most luxurious brands. Its dramatic and architecturally innovative distillery and 485-acre estate interacts harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.
