This Cuvee Cathelin is a «Prestige Cuvee» from Domaine Jean-Louis Chave. The excellent 1991 vintage is rare; no more than 200 cases were produced. It is a powerful ruby red expression of a mostly Syrah blend that has received exceptional rankings from wine experts.

"The 1991 is a sleeper. I suspect many readers have forgotten how spectacular this vintage was in the northern Rhone, particularly Cote Rotie. When I arrived at 6:00 p.m., September 11, 2001, at Domaine Chave, I found Chave in tears and his family distraught. I had heard about the attacks on the World Trade Center, but not the subsequent collapse of both towers. Gerard Chave knows all about suicidal bombers, having served in the French military during the Algerian revolution. It took a long time to gather sufficient focus to do my tastings. However, the brilliant wines that unfolded in the cellars were, at least for several hours, a much needed antidote for pushing to the back of my mind the horror of 9-11-01."

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

History

Sometimes referred to as France’s royal family when it comes to winemaking, the Chave family has been making wine in this noble northern Rhône terroir since the late 15th century. Their vineyards and winemaking tradition have passed down from father to son through the centuries. The family makes both red and white wine under the Hermitage and St.Joseph appellations. Today, the domaine is run by Gerard Chave and his son, Jean-Louis. The family’s generations of knowledge and expertise is what consistently produces highly rated and valued wines.

Technology

An intimate knowledge of the family land and a traditional approach to winemaking is what produces this domaine’s prestigious and terroir expressed wines. The family uses minimal intervention, new oak and no filtering. Grapes from their plots are vinified separately to give the winemakers more control over the blending process. The family uses minimal intervention, no filtering and oak in which to age the wines.

Northern Rhone

The Northern Rhone is the land of Syrah for reds, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viogner for whites, and blends of both. With some of the steepest slopes in France, the Northern Rhone produces big names like Cote Rotie, Hermitage, Cornas and Condrieu. The Hermitage hill is famous for its powerful Syrah expressions that almost always need a minimum of 5 -10 years before opening. Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is one of the most prestigious producers of the appellation.
